In this video Dr. Shaylih Muehlmann explores the failure of the “war on
drugs” from the perspective of Mexicans who have experienced the brunt
of drug-war violence.

She argues that one of the principle reasons drug prohibition policies have continued despite their clear record of failure and destruction is because the victims of the “war on drugs” have been dehumanized. Dr. Muehlmann is an anthropologist who has lived and done research with people in Mexico whose lives have been deeply impacted by the "war on drugs," she is also the author of the book, "When I Wear My Alligator Boots: Narco-Culture in the U.S Mexican Borderlands” and currently holds the Canada Research Chair in Language, Culture and the Environment at the University of British Columbia in Canada where she is also a Wall Scholar at the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies.
